Full Professor and Director of Research
Professional Summary
Dr. Xidonas Panos is Full Professor and Director of Research at ESSCA École de Management. He
has also been a Visiting Research Professor at École Polytechnique, CREST Laboratory.
He publishes his research in journals such as the European Journal of Operational
Research, the European Journal of Finance, the Annals of Operations Research,
the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions & Money,
the International Review of Financial Analysis, the Review of Quantitative Finance
& Accounting, the Finance Research Letters, the Quantitative Finance, the Journal
of Business Research, the Energy Policy, the Omega etc.
Also, Dr. Xidonas is Chairman of the Investment Committee at the Hellenic Social Security
Pension Fund. He possesses substantial experience in conducting large scale theoretical and
applied research in the fields of applied mathematics, investment management and
information systems. He is a R&D team leader with strong professional credentials,
specialized in the area of financial engineering analytics. Moreover, he has an extended
consulting track record as a quantitative investment strategist, having delivered premium
advice within the underlying industry.
Dr. Xidonas is holder of the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR), the highest
academic badge in France, from the Université de Lille. He holds a PhD in Operational
Research & Financial Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and a
MSc in Mathematical Modeling from the same university. Finally, he holds a BSc in Physics
from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Mr. Xydonas has authored numerous scientific publications in top-tier international journals, predominantly as the principal author, in the combined fields of applied finance, portfolio management, and decision-making. A significant portion of his research focuses specifically on Artificial Intelligence (AI). In particular, a large series of his works addresses topics such as:
a) Machine learning and algorithmic fairness,
b) Responsible AI for measuring productivity with neural networks,
c) Application of neural networks for detecting fake news in food supply chains,
d) Asset pricing using tree-structured quantile regressions, and
e) Evaluating ESG investment efficiency with machine learning algorithms.
Mr. Xydonas’ views on various critical questions surrounding AI are clear and unambiguous. He believes that AI cannot lead to the "humanization of machines," as they can only be trained on our preferences and reflexes. Additionally, he argues that democracy may be threatened by the "algocracy" of AI, particularly when considering the practices of authoritarian regimes that monitor every trace of citizens' physical and digital movements. Finally, in Mr. Xydonas’ view, machines do not possess continuity in the anthropomorphic sense—they do not incorporate the creativity of the human brain and lack the potential for human inspiration. Simply put, they lack intellectual adaptability. However, science still has an open debate on how the human brain functions and how human intelligence is produced.

Values: Foundations in Interdisciplinary Excellence
Our laboratory is rooted in the synergy between cybernetics-the science of communication and control in systems-and artificial intelligence. We uphold:

Mission: Advancing Intelligent Systems for Societal Good
Our laboratory exists to pioneer innovations that harmonize theoretical depth with real-world impact.

Vision: A Future of Symbiotic Intelligence
We envision a world where AI and cybernetic systems empower humanity to tackle existential challenges while preserving dignity and diversity.
